Feel: The Bit Everyone Skips, and Why It’s the Fix

Day 3 of World Resiliency Week

We’re weirdly good at the start and the end. Something hard happens, and about two seconds later we’re going “nah, I’m fine.” It’s the middle we bail on. Day three of World Resiliency Week is all about that middle. We’re calling it Feel, and it’s about actually feeling the thing instead of speed-running past it.

There’s this quiet pressure to look unbothered. To jump straight from “that hurt” to “I’m over it.” But feelings don’t vanish when you ignore them. They just wait, and they are extremely patient.

Numbing is the snooze button

Distracting, scrolling, staying busy, powering through, they all promise the feeling will go away if you just don’t look at it. What they actually do is hit snooze. The feeling comes back, usually around 2am, usually louder. Sitting with something for a minute is how it finishes and clears out. There’s no shortcut around it that actually holds.

Feeling is literally the tool

Here’s the wild part. A feeling, if you let it run, passes way faster than you’d think. Neuroscientist Dr Jill Bolte Taylor reckons the actual chemical surge of an emotion clears your body in about 90 seconds, as long as you don’t keep hitting replay on the story behind it.

Ninety seconds. The reason a bad mood feels like it lasts all day is the replay, not the feeling itself. So you don’t have to fight it. You ride it. Let the wave come, name it, let it pass.

How to feel it without getting wrecked by it

Feeling something doesn’t mean getting swept out to sea. A couple of tools give you a handle:

Box breathing. In for four, hold four, out four, hold four. Slow breathing tells your nervous system it’s safe, and it gives a big feeling somewhere to land. Two rounds and you’ll clock the difference.

The four-step ride, for big ones. Notice it, let it be there, get a bit curious about it, then be kind to yourself about it. One breath each. Keeps you with the feeling without blowing it up.

Move it. Emotion is physical. Shake your hands out, stretch, walk it off, or stack two songs, one that matches your mood and one that lifts it. Sixty seconds of moving beats an hour of overthinking.

Today’s challenge: the Feel Check-In

Three questions, that’s the whole thing. What am I actually feeling right now? (name it.) Where do I feel it in my body? (chest, throat, gut, wherever.) What does it need? (rest, a mate, a walk, a breath.) Then, if you want, share what feeling actually looked like for you today, a story, a post, or a voice note to a friend, with #Feel and #WorldResiliencyWeek.

More tools, and the rest of the week, are at World Resiliency Day.

Tomorrow we hit the turn in the pulse, where feeling becomes doing: Rise.

Fall. Feel. Rise. You’ve got this.
